Harold Stone

A standing stone in the middle of nowhere, basically. Harold Stone sits alone in farmland near Pembroke, and honestly, it's the kind of thing you'll drive straight past if you're not looking for it. But if you're into the Neolithic or Bronze Age stuff - and some people really are - it's worth the detour.

The stone itself is roughly four metres tall, rough-hewn and weathered, marking something ancient on the landscape that archaeologists still aren't entirely certain about. No visitor centre, no interpretation boards, no gift shop. Just you, the stone, and the Pembrokeshire countryside. That's either brilliant or a bit disappointing depending on your outlook.

It works best for walkers and archaeology enthusiasts prepared to do a bit of exploring - you'll need to find it yourself, really, and have a good look around the surrounding fields to get the full sense of the site. Families with young kids will likely get bored within five minutes unless they're properly into ancient stones, which is fair enough.

Since it's free and accessible year-round (as far as anyone can tell), it slots nicely into a broader Pembrokeshire trip. Pair it with a stay at one of the nearby parks - Sky Meadow Glamping is closest at 1.4 miles, or Parke Farm Camping if you want something more conventional - and make it part of a walking loop rather than a destination in itself. Allow maybe 30 minutes unless you're taking photos or sketching the stone. Go early on a clear day when the light's decent.
