St Syth’s Chapel

The chapel sits alone on the moorland just outside Bodmin, a tiny stone structure that's been standing since medieval times. This isn't a grand tourist attraction - it's properly remote and atmospheric in a way that catches you off guard. You'll find yourself almost the only person there, which is half the appeal.

St Syth's is essentially a one-roomer with rough stone walls and a low doorway. The interior is simple: altar, a few facts about the saint it's dedicated to, and windows that frame the moor. It's the kind of place that makes sense to visit if you're already walking the South West Coast Path or exploring Bodmin Moor on foot. Trying to drive here and expect a day out would be daft.

Historically minded visitors will appreciate its age and the sheer remoteness of its setting - chapels like this tell you something real about medieval devotion in isolated corners of Cornwall. But don't expect signage, facilities, or a visitor centre. There's nothing here but the building itself and the landscape around it.

It works brilliantly as a quiet stop during a bigger moorland walk, and the isolation means you'll actually feel it, rather than just view it. If you're staying at Rosebud Farm Touring Park nearby, it's a reasonable detour for a proper wander. Allow 20 minutes for the chapel itself, longer if you're making it part of a wider walk. Go on a clear day - the moor shows itself off properly when the weather cooperates.
