St Peter, Peter Tavy

The church sits in Peter Tavy village like it's been there forever - because it has, medieval stone and all, just a few miles south of Tavistock. St Peter is a proper working parish church with the kind of understated charm you find scattered across Devon's smaller villages, the sort of place locals actually use rather than tour groups swarm. Inside, there's decent medieval architecture, some nice period detail if you're into that sort of thing, and the churchyard is genuinely peaceful. The real pull here is context: you're not coming to see something world-changing, you're stepping into how people worshipped and lived centuries ago in rural Devon.

It works well as part of a rambling holiday rather than a destination in itself. From Langstone Manor Holiday Park, just 2.5 miles away, or Woodovis a bit further out, you could easily combine a visit with a walk around the village and towards Dartmoor - the moorland edges are close enough to make a proper day of it. The church gives you a reason to slow down, look at the granite and thatch around you, maybe grab a pint in Tavistock afterwards.

Admission appears to be free, as with most village churches, though best call ahead if you're making a special trip. You'll need twenty minutes maximum inside, longer if you're sketching or photographing. Go on a quiet weekday morning and you'll have the place to yourself. It's the kind of spot that rewards those who've actually stopped walking long enough to look.
