St Oswald's Church, Thornton in Lonsdale

The churchyard at St Oswald's sits perched above Thornton in Lonsdale like something from a watercolour - all grey stone and ancient yews, with proper fell views rolling away behind it. It's a working parish church that's been standing here since medieval times, though what you see now is largely Victorian restoration. Inside, there's a decent amount of original stonework and some charming period details if you're into that sort of thing.

This isn't a destination that will keep you for hours. Realistically, you're looking at thirty minutes to walk around the church and churchyard, read a few plaques, and soak in the atmosphere. It works best as a stop-off during a walk rather than a reason to make a special trip. The setting is genuinely lovely though - that elevated position means you're not fighting your way through a village to reach it.

Families won't find much to occupy children, and unless you're a serious church tourist, this is more of a pleasant pause than a main event. But if you're staying at Primrose Glamping Pods just down the road, it's absolutely the sort of easy walk worth doing of a morning. The wider area around Carnforth has several decent campsites within striking distance - Philpin Farm and Orcaber Farm are both solid bases for exploring the Lune Valley. The church fits nicely into a day that includes a proper walk across the fells or a visit to the nearby villages.
