St Michael's Church, Llanvihangel Crucorney

The name alone - Llanvihangel Crucorney - tells you this is proper Welsh Marches territory, even though it's technically in Herefordshire. St Michael's sits in a tiny hamlet south of Hereford, and frankly, it's the sort of place you'd drive past without thinking twice if you didn't know what was inside.

But the interior is genuinely worth stopping for. This is a medieval church that hasn't been over-restored into blandness. You get original roof timbers, some decent carved stone, and that authentic feel of somewhere that's actually been used for worship for centuries rather than turned into a museum. The churchyard is peaceful - overgrown in places, which adds to the atmosphere rather than detracting from it.

It's ideal for history types and anyone doing a proper walk around the Marches countryside. Kids won't get much from it unless they're the sort who enjoy old buildings - it's small and fairly austere. Allow twenty minutes, maybe half an hour if you're the type who reads every memorial.

Access appears to be unrestricted, though it's worth checking locally before a special visit. The surrounding lanes are excellent for rambling, and you're perfectly positioned between the glamping spots around the area - Goytree and Grove Farm are both within three miles and would work well as bases for exploring this sort of half-forgotten corner of England. It's genuinely quiet, which is increasingly rare.
