St Michael & All Angels, Haworth

The church sits at the top of Haworth's steep main street, a solid stone building that anchors the whole village. It's a proper pilgrimage spot for Bronte fans, which means it gets busy in peak season, but go on a quieter weekday morning and you'll have the place almost to yourself.

Inside, the church is fairly austere - whitewashed walls, high windows, the kind of Victorian restoration that strips away much medieval character. Don't expect elaborate monuments. What you're really after is the atmosphere and the connection to the literary history that saturates this corner of West Yorkshire. Keighley, the nearest town, is about 4 miles away. Winter can be bleak and atmospheric here; summer brings the crowds. Either way, the climb is worth it.
