St Mechell's Church

The graveyard at St Mechell's sits on a windswept corner of Anglesey, a proper slice of medieval Wales that most visitors speed past on the way to somewhere else. The church itself dates back to the 6th century, though what you're looking at now is mostly 15th-century work - sturdy stone, weathered to grey, with a tower that's solid rather than showy.

What makes it worth stopping for is the walk around the churchyard. Moss-covered gravestones lean at odd angles, and there's a sense of real age here that doesn't feel manufactured. The church is dedicated to St Mechell, a saint most people have never heard of, which adds to the quiet, slightly forgotten atmosphere. On a clear day the views across towards Cemaes Bay remind you why people bothered building anything in this spot centuries ago.

It's the kind of place walkers stumble across rather than plan trips around, though it works brilliantly as a stop-off if you're based at one of the nearby campsites - Llain Ffynnon or Pengraig are both within a few miles and excellent. You'll want maybe 20 minutes here, half an hour if you're the type to read inscriptions. Free to visit, obviously. Go in decent weather; it's rather bleak when the wind's up and the rain's coming sideways off the Irish Sea.
