Llanlleiana Nunnery and Graveyard (site of)

There's not much left to see at Llanlleiana, to be honest - which is precisely why it matters. This is where a medieval nunnery once stood on Anglesey, near the quiet village of Cemaes Bay, and today you're looking at an archaeological site that's more about imagination than Instagram moments. The graveyard remains, weathered stones among rough grass, the kind of place where you can almost feel the centuries settling around you.

It's the sort of spot that appeals to history buffs and walkers more than families hoping for interactive exhibits or manicured paths. You won't need long - twenty minutes gets you round comfortably - but if you're interested in medieval Wales and the lives of religious communities, it's worth the detour. The isolation is part of the draw; Anglesey's northern coast doesn't pull the crowds you'd find at Caernarfon or Conwy.

Access and facilities aren't clearly signposted, so come prepared to do a bit of detective work locally once you reach Cemaes Bay. It's free, obviously, since there's nothing formally managed here. If you're staying at one of the nearby campsites - Dolydd is barely two miles away, with Llain Ffynnon and Gadfa Touring Park within five - you could easily combine this with walks along the Anglesey coastal path, which passes through some genuinely lovely terrain. Winter's actually the better time; fewer tourists and the bare landscape suits the mood of the place.
