Dinas Gynfor Hillfort

Climbing up to Dinas Gynfor feels like stepping back two thousand years. This Iron Age hillfort sits above Cemaes Bay on Anglesey's north coast, and the walk alone is worth doing - steep enough to get your heart going, but rewarding enough that you won't regret it. The fort itself is essentially earthworks now: concentric defensive banks and ditches that once protected an entire community. On a clear day, views sweep across the Menai Strait toward Snowdonia.

History enthusiasts will find this genuinely absorbing. There's real archaeology here rather than a visitor centre with a gift shop. You're walking among actual Iron Age defences, imagining what life looked like when this was a functioning settlement. The site demands a bit of effort and some basic map reading, which filters out the casual crowd.

Families with older kids will manage fine if they're decent walkers. Younger children might struggle with the steep approach and the lack of obvious "things" once you reach the top - there are no reconstructions or interactive bits, just the land itself. Allow a solid hour including the climb and time to nose around the ramparts.

Stay at one of the nearby campsites - Dolydd is closest at two miles, or Mount View is well-positioned for exploring the wider area. The site is free to visit and accessible year-round, though winter brings muddy paths. Spring and early summer are properly lovely when the coastal wildflowers are out. This works well as a half-morning trip combined with a beach walk or a visit to nearby spots.
