St. Matthew Llanelwedd

The churchyard sits quietly on the edge of Llanelwedd, a small settlement just outside Builth Wells in Powys. St. Matthew's is a modest medieval church - the sort of place that rewards the curious but won't take up much of your afternoon. The building itself is straightforward and honest, with the kind of architecture you find scattered across rural Wales: stone walls, a simple layout, and the sort of stillness that comes from centuries of Sunday services and local burials.

Inside, there's enough to occupy a history enthusiast for twenty minutes or so - the usual church fixtures, some decent stonework, and that peculiar peace you only get in these smaller rural churches. The churchyard is worth a wander too, with older gravestones that tell you something about who lived and died in this corner of Powys.

This isn't a destination in itself, but it works well as a break if you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - Penmaenau Farm or Celtic Woodland Holidays are just under a mile away. It fits neatly into a day exploring Builth Wells itself, or as a gentle ramble if you're based at Disserth or Irfon River parks further out. Walkers and local history types will appreciate it more than families with young children.

Free to visit, naturally. No formal opening hours that we can find, though the churchyard is accessible during daylight. Allow 20-30 minutes if you're genuinely interested in the building itself.
