Royal Welsh Agricultural Society Showground

The Royal Welsh Agricultural Society Showground sits just outside Builth Wells, and if you're camping in the area, you'll spot it easily enough - a sprawling venue that hosts the Royal Welsh Show each July, one of Britain's biggest agricultural events. Outside show season, the grounds themselves aren't really open to the public as a casual visitor attraction, which is worth knowing upfront.

That said, if you're here during the show, it's brilliant. You get livestock competitions, crafts, food stalls, farming demonstrations, and enough red-faced farmers in flat caps to remind you this is proper rural Wales. The atmosphere is infectious - there's a real sense of community and tradition. Families enjoy it, though you'll want to plan a full day and bring sensible shoes; the ground gets muddy and the crowds are substantial.

The showground itself is unremarkable outside of event season - just fields and infrastructure. But timing a camping trip to coincide with the July show transforms it into something worth planning around. Penmaenau Farm Camping is barely half a mile away, making it ridiculously convenient if you want to attend. Celtic Woodland Holidays and Fforest Fields are equally close options if you prefer glamping pods.

Check the Royal Welsh Show website for exact dates and tickets - admission isn't free, but day passes are reasonable. Allow a full day if you're attending. Outside July, give the grounds a miss and focus on Builth Wells town itself or the surrounding Wye Valley instead.
