St. Mary’s Church : Elloughton

The church sits quietly at the heart of Elloughton village, a proper Yorkshire parish church that rewards a slow wander round its churchyard. St. Mary's is mostly 14th century - all chunky stonework and tall windows - though parts go back further, which is the kind of thing you notice when you actually stand there looking up at it rather than rushing through. Inside, there's decent medieval glass and the sort of peaceful silence you only get in old churches on a weekday afternoon.

It's the kind of place that appeals to architecture enthusiasts and local history buffs more than casual tourists, though anyone passing through Brough shouldn't dismiss it. The churchyard itself is pleasant enough for a stroll, with decent views across the surrounding countryside. Allow 20 minutes unless you're genuinely interested in the stonework and brasses, in which case give yourself an hour.

The village is well positioned for a caravan holiday - Willow Pond Caravan Site and Little Wold Away Glamping are both close by, making this an easy stop between exploring the Wolds and visiting Brough itself. It's free to visit, naturally, and there's no admission office to worry about. Spring and summer are nicest for the churchyard, though autumn's got its own appeal if you don't mind the damp.
