St Mary's Church, Dennington

The church sits in the quiet village of Dennington, a few miles east of Woodbridge, and it's genuinely worth the short detour if you're camping in the area. St Mary's is a proper medieval parish church, all flint and stone, with that distinctive Suffolk character - nothing flashy, just honest craftsmanship from centuries past.

Inside, you'll find some genuinely interesting bits. There's excellent woodwork - pews and roof bosses that reward close inspection - and the church has retained much of its original character without being over-restored. The brass rubbings and monuments tell the stories of local families who mattered once. It's the kind of place that appeals most to people who actually enjoy reading the old stones rather than ticking off a checklist.

The real draw here isn't necessarily St Mary's alone, but rather that it anchors a proper village walk. Park near Woodbridge, wander out to Dennington on foot, spend thirty minutes inside the church, then loop back via the quiet lanes. The surrounding countryside is exactly what Suffolk does best - gentle, unhurried, genuine.

Access is normally free (though do check ahead - churches vary). You won't need more than forty-five minutes if you're moving steadily, though history enthusiasts could easily spend longer. If you're camping at Savage Glamping or The Croft, both within three and a half miles, this makes for a proper morning's outing without feeling touristy. Go on a weekday if possible - you'll have the place to yourself.
