St Machraeth

The church sits quietly on Anglesey's windswept coast, a modest stone building that's been standing since medieval times. St Machraeth is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for - a proper local landmark that won't have queues or gift shops, just genuinely old Welsh architecture and the weight of centuries pressing down on its walls.

Inside, it's peaceful and simple. No crowds, no commentary tracks. The kind of place where you can actually think, which sounds daft but feels rare these days. It's dedicated to Saint Macraeth, one of those lesser-known Celtic saints whose stories are tangled up with local legend and faith that predates Christianity itself.

Families won't linger long unless they're the contemplative type, but walkers using Anglesey's coastal paths will find it a natural stopping point.

Access from Holyhead is straightforward. There's no admission charge that I'm aware of, and no set hours - it's the sort of church you visit when you're passing. Allow twenty minutes unless you're genuinely interested in the architecture and local history, in which case linger longer.

If you're staying at Llain Ffynnon or Pengraig campsite, both within five miles, this makes a decent afternoon detour between beach days and longer walks along the coast. It won't blow your mind, but it's worth knowing about.
