St. John’s Cathedral

The cathedral sits just inland from Lee-on-the-Solent's seafront, a solid Victorian structure that wouldn't look out of place in a cathedral city proper. Built in the 19th century, St. John's has that characterful red brick look - all sharp angles and genuine Gothic Revival ambition, which is rather charming for what is essentially a town cathedral in a modest seaside resort.

Inside, the space is properly calm. High ceilings, decent stained glass, the kind of quiet that makes you want to whisper even if there's no service on. You're looking at 20 minutes maximum if you're just passing through, though if you're into Victorian ecclesiastical architecture or want a moment's peace from the seafront bustle, it's worth lingering.

It's free to wander in during opening hours, though exact times aren't widely advertised - ringing ahead makes sense. Families with restless kids might find it brief, but older children and history types will appreciate the craftsmanship.

The cathedral works well as part of a seaside day if you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Kingfisher Caravan Park is just down the road, or Hayling Island Holiday Park and Mill Rythe Coastal Village are within easy reach. Call it your cultural tick-box before heading to the beach or the seafront pubs. It's solid rather than spectacular, but that's rather the point.
