The Sir Alec Rose is a modest but genuinely affecting memorial to one man's extraordinary achievement. Back in 1967, this Lee-on-the-Solent sailor became the first person to sail single-handed around the world, at the age of 67. The boat itself - or what remains of it - sits here as a testament to that incredible voyage.

It's not flashy. There's no grand museum building or interactive displays. You get the boat, the story, and a sense of why locals still talk about it. If you've got even a passing interest in maritime history or just human stubbornness, it's worth an hour of your time. The site works best for adults and older children who can appreciate what they're actually looking at - younger kids might struggle to see beyond an old vessel.

Lee-on-the-Solent itself is a proper little seaside town with a working waterfront, so this fits neatly into a broader wander around the coast.
