St John the Evangelist, Wicken

The church sits quietly in Wicken village, a couple of miles south of Buckingham, and it's one of those places that rewards a slight detour. St John the Evangelist is a proper medieval church - mostly 14th century - with that satisfying solidity you get from old Northamptonshire stone. The nave's decent enough, but it's the chancel that catches you. There's real craftsmanship in the woodwork and some genuinely moving monuments tucked into the walls.

It's free to wander in, and you'll need maybe 20 minutes unless you're really into church architecture, in which case you could lose an hour studying the details. The building's maintained well enough that it doesn't feel abandoned, but it's quiet - you won't fight crowds here. This isn't a church that's trying to be a tourist attraction. It just is.

Historically minded types will get more out of it than casual visitors, though families with kids interested in old buildings won't find it dull. The churchyard's pleasant for a wander too.

If you're based at one of the local campsites - Hedgehog Retreat is only three miles away, or Windmill Farm and the Silverstone options slightly further - it's a straightforward morning visit alongside exploring the market town of Buckingham itself. Don't expect grand drama, but do expect to find something genuine.
