St John the Baptist Parish Church, Alnmouth

The church sits right at the heart of Alnmouth village, a proper Victorian seaside settlement that's kept much of its character despite the years. St John the Baptist is a solid, unpretentious building - the sort of parish church you'd walk past without much fanfare, except that it's genuinely worth a proper look inside.

The interior has that calming, stripped-back feel of many English parish churches. There's nothing showy about it, which is rather the point. You'll find decent stained glass, some brass monuments scattered about, and the kind of peaceful atmosphere that makes you actually want to sit down for five minutes rather than just tick it off.

It works particularly well if you're doing a wider coastal walk from nearby Alnwick - the village itself is charming without being twee, and the church anchors the whole place. Families won't find it thrilling for long, but if you're the sort of person who enjoys church architecture and local history, there's enough here to make it a worthwhile stop. Free admission, naturally.

If you're staying at Coast and Castles Camping just 2.6 miles away, or one of the other parks dotted along the coast, this pairs neatly with a morning stroll through Alnmouth itself. Allow fifteen minutes inside, longer if you're actually interested in what's there rather than just being completionist about it. Best visited midweek when you've got the place virtually to yourself.
