St James, Woodhead

The walk up to St James is half the point. Perched on a windswept moor above Holmfirth, this stone church sits where the Pennines start to mean business - exposed, a bit lonely, absolutely worth the climb. The building itself is modest but proper atmospheric, with that grey stone warmth you only get in old Northern churches. Inside, you'll find Victorian touches and the kind of quiet that makes you actually think.

Historians and walkers get the most from it. If you're into industrial Lancashire or moorland hiking, this isn't something to skip - it's on routes people actually use rather than somewhere coachloads descend upon. The views from the churchyard back towards Holmfirth and across the valley are genuinely worth stopping for, though it'll take you a proper walk to get there. Allow a couple of hours if you're making it part of a moorland circuit, or just 30 minutes if you're popping up from the car park.

Stay at Whitegate Leisure or Dovestone Holiday Park and you're ideally placed for exploring this corner - both are within five miles and well-regarded spots. The church works brilliantly as a waypoint on a longer day out rather than a destination by itself. Bring water, wear proper shoes, and go on a clear day when those views actually sing.
