St Govans Head

A narrow stone staircase cuts down a cliff face to a tiny medieval chapel wedged into the rock itself - that's St Govans Head, one of Pembrokeshire's strangest and most rewarding corners. The chapel sits right at sea level, built into what locals reckon is a cave that once belonged to Saint Govan himself. Whether you believe the legend or not, the spot is genuinely atmospheric, especially when you've made the effort to get there.

The walk down takes about five minutes from the cliff-top car park, and it's the kind of scramble that feels properly adventurous without being dangerous. You descend these ancient steps - some worn paper-thin by centuries of footsteps - and suddenly you're in this sheltered cove with a small stone church no bigger than a garden shed. It's free, and there are no opening hours to worry about; you just turn up. High tide can limit access to the chapel itself, so check conditions before you go.

Walkers will love this as part of a longer coastal loop, though it works equally well as a standalone detour from Pembroke. The cliffs here are dramatic without the crowds you'd find at some of the bigger attractions along the coast. Give yourself an hour including the walk and a sit-down at the top with a flask. If you're based at Parke Farm Camping or Sky Meadow Glamping nearby, it's barely twenty minutes' drive. The coastal path stretches for miles in both directions if you want to make a proper morning of it.
