St. Giles Church

The church itself is a proper medieval job - all flint and stone, sitting quietly at the edge of Fordingbridge with the kind of understated presence that makes you wonder how many people actually notice it. Inside, the wooden beams are genuinely old, the sort of thing that makes you stand still for a moment just looking up. There's decent stained glass if you're into that, though nothing that'll stop you dead in your tracks.

This is really one for the architecture enthusiasts or anyone with a genuine interest in how English parishes evolved. Families with restless kids might find twenty minutes enough - there's not a great deal of interactive stuff, just the building itself and whatever historical plaques they've bolted to the walls. If you're already in Fordingbridge poking around the High Street or along the River Avon, it's absolutely worth the five-minute wander off the main drag.

The practical side - opening hours aren't widely advertised, so you might find it locked outside of services, which is common with smaller rural churches. Walking past from the street costs nothing, obviously, and you can usually peer through the windows if the door's shut. Allow maybe fifteen to thirty minutes if you do get in.

If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Seadown or Hill Cottage Farm are both within shouting distance - St. Giles makes a decent punctuation mark during a day exploring the New Forest fringes. It's not a reason to plan your entire holiday around, but it fills a slot nicely between more substantial attractions in the area.
