King Barrow

King Barrow rises up from the New Forest landscape just outside Fordingbridge, offering proper views across the heathland if you can be bothered with the walk. It's a Bronze Age burial mound - so you're literally standing on ancient remains, which is worth considering as you climb.

The ascent itself isn't punishing. Twenty minutes or so from the car park and you're up there, scanning the trees and open heath stretching toward the horizon. On a clear day it's decent. On a grey one, which is most days, it's moody rather than spectacular. Don't expect a dramatic peak - this is Dorset heathland, not the Alps.

History buffs will find it interesting. The barrow's Bronze Age provenance gives it proper weight, even if there's limited interpretation on site. Families with young kids might find the walk tedious for the payoff, though teenagers who've learned about Iron Age Britain at school could appreciate the authenticity.

It's free and accessible year-round. Allow an hour including the walk and a breather at the top. The surrounding heathland is lovely for a broader wander afterward. If you're staying at Hill Cottage Farm or Ashley Heath, both within striking distance of Fordingbridge, this slots nicely into a morning before moving on to the Forest or exploring the town itself. Don't make it the highlight of your holiday, but don't skip it either if you're in the area.
