St Edmund’s Church

There's something quietly commanding about St Edmund's Church in Crickhowell. It's a proper medieval structure with enough character to justify the walk through the village, even if you're not normally one for churches.

The building itself is the draw - fifteenth century mostly, with some lovely stone work and a tower that dominates the village skyline. Inside, it's peaceful rather than spectacular, with decent stained glass and the kind of flags on the floor that tell you people have been worshipping here for centuries. The churchyard is worth a wander too, especially if you like reading old gravestones.

If you're staying at Cwmdu Campsite nearby, this makes an easy morning potter into the village centre. Crickhowell's a solid little town with decent cafés and pubs, so you can make an hour of it without feeling rushed. History buffs will appreciate the medieval bits, but families with young kids might find it a bit tame - there's not much to actually do inside, just look at.

Free to enter as far as these things go. No grand ticket office, just walk in during daylight hours. Allow twenty minutes to half an hour unless you're really into ecclesiastical architecture, then you'll happily stretch it to an hour with the churchyard included.

Not a destination by itself, but the sort of stop that makes sense if you're exploring the area around Powys. Pairs well with a Crickhowell lunch and a walk along the Brecon Beacons.
