St Cuthbert's Parish Church, Amble

The church sits right in the heart of Amble, a working fishing port that feels properly lived-in rather than prettified. St Cuthbert's Parish Church is a solid medieval structure - you can't miss the stone tower when you're wandering around the harbour. It's dedicated to Cuthbert, the saint all over this region, which tells you something about the place's age and importance to local communities.

Inside, it's got the usual ecclesiastical setup - nave, chancel, some decent stained glass - but what strikes you most is the genuinely maritime feel. This is a working church for a working town, not some tourist theatre piece. If you're into church architecture or religious history, you'll find enough to occupy twenty minutes or so. Everyone else might give it five.

Amble itself is worth the walk around. The harbour's got proper character - fishing boats, fish and chip shops that don't pretend to be gastropubs, locals who'll actually talk to you. It's fifteen minutes from Alnwick if you're basing yourself there, and not far from Woodland Chase Glamping either if that's where you're staying. The town's small enough that you can combine it with a coastal walk or a meal without it feeling shoehorned in.

Admission is free, which is the right call for a parish church. Go if you're in the area, interested in medieval Northumberland, or just want to break up a harbour walk. Don't drive specially from miles away just for this one.
