St. Columba’s Cathedral

The cathedral sits in central Oban, a solid stone structure that commands attention without shouting about it. Built in the 19th century, St. Columba's is Catholic - which matters historically given the religious tensions that shaped the Highlands. The interior is genuinely lovely, with decent stained glass and that particular quiet you only get inside old churches.

What you're really doing here is stepping into local life. This isn't a museum piece cordoned off for tourists. Real people worship here, which gives it weight that a purely historical site wouldn't have. The architecture is Victorian Gothic, so if you're into that period it reads properly. Twenty minutes inside is enough unless you're a proper cathedral enthusiast, though many visitors spend a bit longer just sitting.

Oban itself is the draw - a working harbour town, not a sanitised version of one. The cathedral works as part of a morning's wandering before lunch at the waterfront. It's free to enter and there's no awkward donation box guilt, though contributions are welcome.

If you're staying at Oban Holiday Park, Tanunda Pods or Maggie's Cabin, this is literally on your doorstep - worth an hour's exploration before heading out to nearby Dunollie Castle or along the coastal walks. Solo travellers and families with older kids will get something from it. Young children might find it a bit static. Go when it's not raining, because the grey stone can feel properly grim on a wet afternoon.
