St Bartholomew's Church, Moreton Corbet

The church sits quietly beside the ruins of Moreton Corbet Castle, about five miles northeast of Shrewsbury, and it's one of those places that rewards you for finding it. St Bartholomew's is a proper medieval structure - part 12th century, part later additions - with enough character in its stonework and interior to make the detour worthwhile if you're already exploring the castle grounds.

What strikes you first is how intimate it feels. The nave is compact, the light filters through old glass, and there's none of that touristy fuss you get at the big-name churches. You can spend twenty minutes here comfortably, or stay longer if medieval architecture gets you going. The chancel and font are the real draws for anyone into that sort of thing.

It's not a destination in itself - be honest, you wouldn't drive out here just for the church. But if you're camping at Springfield Riverside or Shropshire Glamping nearby and you've got a morning free, combine it with the castle ruins. They're literally next door, making for a proper half-day outing. The walk between them is minimal.

Access seems straightforward, though opening hours aren't always posted, so check before you visit. It's free to get in. Families with older kids will find it interesting; younger ones might get restless after ten minutes. Real worth adding to a Shropshire itinerary if you're already in the area.
