Medieval town centre with Tudor buildings River Severn loop walks Charles Darwin's birthplace Ancient castle and historic streets

About Shrewsbury

Ancient timber-framed buildings lean conspiratorially over narrow medieval streets in this magnificent market town, where the River Severn loops around the centre like a protective arm. Shrewsbury's character runs deep through its red sandstone walls and black-and-white Tudor facades - this is one of England's finest medieval towns, and it bloody well knows it.

The town centre feels almost continental on market days, with proper independent shops filling the historic Rows and medieval passages. Charles Darwin was born here, and you can almost imagine him wandering these same cobbled streets as a curious lad. The castle dominates the skyline, though the real joy lies in simply getting lost among the narrow lanes.

Beyond the ancient walls, Shropshire's gentle countryside rolls away in all directions. The Woodlands and surrounding copses like Forge Coppice offer excellent walking, while Shawbury Nature Park provides a lovely afternoon escape just north of town. It's farming country at its most appealing - green fields dotted with black-and-white cattle, punctuated by ancient church spires.

Getting here's straightforward enough - the A5 runs right past, and there's a proper train service from Birmingham and beyond. The town sits roughly halfway between Telford and the Welsh border, making it a cracking base for exploring mid-Wales or the industrial heritage sites around Coalbrookdale.

Staying at one of the nearby holiday parks makes perfect sense. You're close enough to wander into town for dinner at one of the excellent pubs, yet far enough out to wake up to proper countryside views. The River Severn provides some lovely walking routes, and you're well-positioned for day trips to Ludlow or the Brecon Beacons.
