Moreton Corbet Castle

The ruins sprawl across a gentle slope just north of Shrewsbury, and what you're looking at is roughly 900 years of architectural ambition gone to seed. Moreton Corbet Castle started life as a Norman fortress in the 12th century, then got the Renaissance treatment in the 16th when someone decided to bolt a proper Elizabethan mansion onto the medieval bones. Today you get both - the sturdy tower keep from the castle's early days standing alongside the gutted shell of that later house.

It's free to wander around, and honestly, it won't eat up your afternoon. Most people spend forty minutes to an hour picking through the rubble and climbing what's left of the staircases. The views across the Shropshire countryside are decent without being dramatic. History buffs will find it genuinely interesting - the architectural transition from medieval to Tudor is right there in front of you. Families with younger kids might find it a bit underwhelming once the novelty of clambering over stones wears off.

The site's unmanned and open year-round, though winter can leave it muddy and a bit bleak. Spring or autumn are better bets. It works well as a quick stop if you're based at Springfield Riverside Camping or any of the parks dotted around the area - Sunnyside Farm and Beaconsfield are both within easy reach. Pair it with a proper wander around Shrewsbury itself and you've got a solid half-day sorted.
