Shawbury Dog Field

The Dog Field at Shawbury, just outside Shrewsbury, is exactly what it sounds like - a proper space where dogs can run free and actually be dogs. No leads required, just open ground where your spaniel or terrier can burn off whatever energy they've accumulated from being cooped up in the caravan.

It's genuinely useful rather than thrilling. You won't spend hours here, but if you're camping nearby at Springfield Riverside or Ebury Hill and your dog is going stir-crazy, it solves that particular problem in ten minutes. The field itself is unremarkable - typical Shropshire grassland with space to throw a ball about. What matters is the freedom element. Dogs get a proper run, owners get a brief break from the walking trails.

Bring a long lead just in case the recall's dodgy, though the field's reasonably enclosed. Best visited early morning to avoid crowds and the worst of the afternoon heat. You won't need more than 20 or 30 minutes unless your dog is particularly sociable and strikes up friendships.

This is worth knowing about if you're doing a caravan holiday in the Shrewsbury area and travelling with a dog, but don't make a special trip. Slot it in between proper attractions like the Severn Valley or walks around the surrounding countryside. It's a practical amenity rather than a destination, and that's absolutely fine - sometimes holidays just need practical amenities.
