Castle Rough

The woodland around Castle Rough, just outside Shrewsbury, is the sort of place you stumble into rather than plan for - which is exactly why it works. Ancient trees, a proper forest floor thick with moss and leaf litter, and the occasional glimpse of what locals reckon are the earthwork remains of a medieval fortification. You won't find much in the way of signage or interpretation, but that's part of its charm.

Walkers get the most from this spot. The trees create a lovely canopy, making it decent for a quiet morning ramble even on days when the weather's being temperamental. It's not a destination in itself - allow 45 minutes to an hour - but rather a solid addition to a longer Shropshire wandering day. Families with kids who enjoy a bit of scrambling around in woodland will find it engaging enough, though there's nothing here to keep a screen-addicted teenager entertained for long.

The whole setup suits a caravan or glamping holiday in the area beautifully. Springfield Riverside and Hawk Lake are both within three or four miles, so you could easily combine this with more ambitious walks or trips into Shrewsbury itself. Shropshire Glamping sits at five miles, still a reasonable drive. Pack a thermos and go when the light's low - late afternoon gives the forest a proper moody quality that midday sun just doesn't manage.
