The Moat sits just outside Shrewsbury, close enough for a morning visit but far enough out to feel like actual countryside. There's not much standing structure to speak of - this is archaeology in its most honest form, really. The raised bank and surrounding depression tell the story if you know how to read them, which makes it ideal for anyone with a genuine interest in how Norman settlement patterns worked across the West Midlands.

It's a straightforward walk once you've found it, though access can be a bit unclear from the road - worth asking locals in Shrewsbury first. Allow half an hour maximum, maybe an hour if you're the type to sit and imagine what life looked like 900 years ago. There's no visitor facility, no interpretation board, nothing fancy. That's either brilliant or disappointing depending on your approach to history.

Staying at one of the nearby parks - Lower Lacon Caravan Park is closest at under a mile away - gives you an excellent base for exploring Shropshire's medieval landscape more broadly. Shrewsbury itself has far more substantial Norman remains if this whets your appetite. The wider area is genuinely rewarding for anyone keen on how England's border country developed after 1066. Just don't expect the moat itself to occupy a full afternoon.
