Preston Springs

The woodland around Preston Springs, just outside Shrewsbury, is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for. Ancient trees tower overhead, the forest floor thick with moss and leaf litter, and a proper sense of peace settles in once you're a few minutes past the entrance.

It's a forest walk, fundamentally - not a theme park or a visitor centre. You come here to move through the trees, to breathe differently, to let the kids burn some energy without them realising they're walking. The springs themselves are the draw if you're interested in that sort of thing, a natural water feature that appeals more to geologists and keen naturalists than casual visitors. Most people spend between one and two hours here, depending on how far they venture into the woodland.

The main crowd would be families with school-age children, active types who like a decent walk without needing a mountain, and anyone wanting a proper break from Shrewsbury town centre. It's free to access and open year-round, though winter can make the paths boggy and autumn is genuinely lovely for colour. Spring and early summer bring wildflowers and birdsong.

If you're based at Lower Lacon Caravan Park or Springfield Riverside just down the road, this works as a morning outing before heading elsewhere. It's not a full-day attraction on its own, but paired with Shrewsbury's town centre or other Shropshire walks, it slots in nicely. Bring decent footwear - proper boots if you've got them - and expect mud.
