St. Andrews Station Park

The old railway line that once connected St Andrews to the outside world is now something rather different - a linear nature reserve that runs through fields and past hedgerows where you'd expect trains to have rumbled through decades ago. It's a proper peaceful walk, the kind where you actually notice birdsong instead of just assuming it's there.

You get maybe a mile or so of easy, flat walking along what used to be the track bed. Depends what time of year you visit - spring brings wildflowers, autumn turns the hedgerows golden. It's not dramatic scenery by any stretch, but that's rather the point. Birdwatchers will find it worthwhile, particularly in migration season. Families with younger kids might manage twenty minutes before the novelty wears off, though older children who actually want to spot things will keep you there longer.

From Cairnsmill Caravan Park or Craigtoun Meadows just down the road, it's an easy stroll into St Andrews proper via this route, so worth combining with a university town walk rather than treating it as a destination in itself. The nearest facilities are in St Andrews town centre, about a fifteen-minute walk away. There's no visitor centre or café here - it's pure green space, free to access, best tackled on a clear day when the light's decent for spotting wildlife. Goes without saying you'll want proper walking boots if there's been rain.
