Ss Ethelbert & Gertrude, Ramsgate

The twin spires of this Victorian church rise above Ramsgate's seafront like something from a postcard. Ss Ethelbert & Gertrude is a proper statement building - all red brick and Gothic revival ambition, sitting on Sion Road with views across the town towards the coast. It's the sort of place that stops you mid-walk, makes you look up.

Inside, it's all soaring arches and light streaming through stained glass. The Victorians didn't do subtle, and this church is no exception. There's real craftsmanship here - the kind of detail work you don't see much anymore. You'll spend twenty minutes properly looking round, longer if you're into ecclesiastical architecture. Most visitors spend between thirty minutes and an hour, depending on how deep you want to go with the history.

It appeals to architecture enthusiasts, local historians, and anyone with a camera and good light. Families with older kids will find it interesting; younger ones might find it a bit static. Free entry, naturally.

If you're staying at Birchington Vale Holiday Park just four miles away, this is a solid half-hour detour on a decent day. Alternatively, base yourself at Sandwich Leisure Holiday Park (6 miles off) and string this together with Ramsgate's seafront attractions - the harbour, the promenade, the vintage shops. It's not a destination in itself, but it's worth the climb up from the town centre when you're already in the area exploring.
