Spelga dam

The dam itself is a functional 1950s concrete structure that's somehow become one of the most photographed spots in County Down. You're looking at a reservoir that supplies water to the region, but the real draw is what surrounds it - the Mourne Mountains rise up on all sides, and the view across the water back towards Newry is genuinely striking, especially on a clear day.

Walkers absolutely love this place. The dam car park puts you right at the start of several decent routes into the Mournes, and you can walk the perimeter if you're after something gentler. Allow 30 minutes to an hour just to potter about and take in the landscape. It's free to visit and the road gets you there easily from Newry, though it's only really worth a dedicated stop if you're already planning to explore the mountains.

Families with young kids might find it a bit thin on activities - there's no visitor centre, no facilities to speak of. You're essentially parking up, having a look, and either walking or moving on. That said, if you're camping at Greenview Glamping or The Rock just down the valley, it's a natural morning walk before breakfast.

Don't expect a destination. Think of it as a proper viewpoint and a launching pad. The Mountains themselves are the real attraction here - the dam is just where you get your first proper glimpse of them.
