Sowers Top

The walk up Sowers Top from Clitheroe takes about forty minutes if you're moving at a reasonable pace, and the payoff is a proper Lancashire panorama that catches you off guard. It's not dramatic in an Alpine sense - more gently rolling moorland that spreads out across the Ribble Valley, with Pendle Hill doing its famous silhouette thing to the west. The summit itself is modest, a high point rather than a peak with any real teeth, but that's precisely why families manage it without complaint.

Most people tackle this as part of a longer walk rather than a standalone trip. The moorland itself is typical gritstone country - rough grass, the odd stream, nothing manicured. On clear days the views justify the effort. In mist, well, you're trudging through cloud with limited reward, so pick your weather.

Stay at Peaks and Pods just three and a half miles away and you're ideally placed for a morning sortie. The glamping options at Hedgerow and Malham are slightly further out but worth considering if you want something more luxurious after the hike. An hour up, an hour down, maybe an extra thirty minutes if you're stopping for photos or catching your breath - that's your afternoon sorted.

It works as part of a wider walk through the Clitheroe area rather than a destination in itself. Solo walkers and couples get more from the isolation; with small children you might find the exposed moorland a bit dull once the novelty wears off.
