Somerstown Mural

A sprawling street art installation takes up an entire wall in Lee-on-the-Solent, and it's genuinely worth a detour if you're staying anywhere on the peninsula. The Somerstown Mural is properly ambitious - full colour, large scale, and executed with real skill by local artists. You can see it without paying anything, which is the best kind of gallery.

It's not the sort of place where you'll spend hours, but that's rather the point. Ten minutes to walk up, admire the detail, take photos, and you're done. Kids usually find street art more engaging than stuffy indoor galleries, and there's something satisfying about an artistic intervention that's just there, free to anyone who walks past.

Timing-wise, go during daylight - the colours pop far better than they would in evening light. It's accessible year-round, though you'll want decent weather to linger and properly look at the work without getting soaked.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks - Hayling Island Holiday Park is the closest at just 4.5 miles away - this makes an easy morning outing on a family day. Mill Rythe Coastal Village and Fishery Creek Touring Park are a bit further but still reachable for a quick cultural pit stop between seaside time and lunch. Lee-on-the-Solent itself is pleasant enough, with a shingle beach and coastal walks, so you could tack this onto something bigger rather than making it a standalone trip.
