Snelslow Swallet

Water disappears into the ground here, which sounds simple until you're standing at the mouth of Snelslow Swallet watching it actually happen. This is a proper sinkhole cave in the limestone hills above Hope Valley - the sort of place that reminds you why the Peak District's geology matters. The swallet itself is modest in scale, nothing like the show caves you'll find at Castleton, but that's partly what makes it worth seeking out. There's a rawness to it; you're looking at actual karst landscape in action, not a manicured tourist attraction.

The walk to reach it takes you through classic Derbyshire moorland, rolling and open, with decent views back towards the valley. Allow a couple of hours for the whole thing if you're moving at a steady pace - it's not strenuous, just pleasant footpath work. The swallet itself won't take long to explore; it's the journey that justifies the trip, especially if you're staying at one of the nearby campsites like Castleton Caravan and Motorhome Club or Derbyshire Hills Campsite.

This works well for walkers and geology enthusiasts. Families might find it a bit underwhelming unless the kids are already keen on caves and natural landscapes - it's not a destination in itself, more of an interesting waypoint on a bigger walk. Visit any time, though you'll appreciate it more in drier weather; after heavy rain it's less visually striking. The approach is free, and there's no formal visitor infrastructure, which means you need to know roughly where you're going. Well worth combining with other Hope Valley attractions if you've got a week or so in the area.
