Snels Low

The walk up Snels Low takes about forty minutes from the Hope Valley side, and it's proper worth the effort. You're climbing to just over 400 metres, nothing mad, but the views across the Dark Peak open up as you gain height - you can see for miles on a clear day.

It's a straightforward fell walk rather than a technical scramble. The path is well-trodden and the gradient builds steadily rather than punishing you all at once. On the way up you pass through moorland and gritstone outcrops, and there's a real sense of being away from things once you're past the initial sections.

The summit itself is modest - no dramatic cairn or trig point to announce you've arrived - but the 360-degree visibility makes the effort feel justified. On a decent day you can clock Mam Tor, Lose Hill, and across towards the limestone edges. Spring and early autumn are probably best; winter can get boggy and exposed wind-wise.

This suits hillwalkers who want something achievable without spending half the day on the hill. It's too exposed and moorish for young kids wanting a casual stroll, but anyone aged ten upwards with reasonable fitness won't struggle. The village of Hope itself has cafes and pubs for afterwards.

Free to walk, obviously. If you're staying at Beech Croft Farm nearby, you're perfectly placed - it's only six miles away, so you could knock this out as a half-day tick before heading back for an afternoon relaxing around the park.
