Smerdon Down Tors

The rocky outcrops that crown Smerdon Down stand out starkly against the moorland, offering proper views across Dartmoor once you've made the climb. It's not a massive summit - nothing on Dartmoor is - but the tors themselves are genuinely striking, all jumbled granite blocks that reward a bit of scrambling about. You get decent sight lines across to Kit Hill and beyond, the kind of perspective that makes you realise how much actual landscape there is out here. Allow an hour or so from the car park in Tavistock, depending on how much time you spend pottering around the rocks. The walk itself is straightforward moorland terrain, which can be boggy after rain, so choose your moment. History buffs will note the Bronze Age associations scattered across this part of Dartmoor - the tors sit within an area thick with ancient settlement remains, though you'll need to know what you're looking for. This isn't a destination that'll occupy a full day unless you're walking onwards into the wider moor, but it's an excellent stop if you're basing yourself at Lydford Caravan & Camping Park or Woodovis Holiday Park, both close enough for an easy afternoon outing. Families with confident walkers will find it manageable; small children might struggle with the terrain and the exposure up top. Free to visit, no facilities on site, and best attempted in decent weather when the visibility justifies the effort.
