Slievemeel

The walk up Slievemeel is a proper leg-stretcher without the full commitment of tackling the higher Mourne peaks. At 679 metres, it's manageable for most reasonably fit walkers, and the views across Down and towards the Irish Sea make the effort worthwhile. You're looking at roughly two hours up and down from the Newry side, depending on your pace and which route you take. The terrain is moorland and grass - bog in places after wet weather, so decent boots matter. What strikes you most is how quickly you escape the noise of Newry. Within half an hour you're genuinely remote, which is no small feat in Northern Ireland. On a clear day the visibility is exceptional. If conditions turn, descend promptly - the mountain shifts character fast in cloud. Families with older children will manage it fine; younger kids might struggle with the duration and gradient. Serious walkers often link Slievemeel with nearby peaks as part of a longer Mourne loop, but it works brilliantly as a standalone half-day. There's no facilities on the mountain itself, so bring water and snacks. The Kilbroney Caravan Park sits just 2.2 miles away and makes an ideal base if you're doing multiple walks in the range. Oakwood and Greenview glamping sites are close enough too if you want something a bit smarter. Best avoided in thick fog or when the ground's waterlogged. Spring and autumn tend to be ideal - fewer midges, clearer skies.
