Slieveacarnane

The walk up Slieveacarnane rewards you with views across the Mourne Mountains that make the legwork genuinely worthwhile. It's not the highest peak in the range - that honour belongs to Slieve Donard - but what it lacks in altitude it makes up for in accessibility and the sheer quality of the outlook once you're up there.

The ascent itself takes about an hour from the car parks near Newry, threading through moorland with decent paths underfoot. On a clear day you're looking across to the granite peaks of the main range, and on quieter weekdays you'll often have the summit mostly to yourself. The terrain is straightforward enough for reasonably fit walkers, though it does get boggy in places so proper footwear matters.

This works brilliantly as part of a longer Mourne Mountains day out rather than a standalone trip. If you're based at Greenview Glamping or Kilbroney Caravan Park, both within easy striking distance, you can string together a proper walking itinerary. The nearby Slieve Donard loop pulls in more experienced hikers, but Slieveacarnane feels less crowded and suits families who want a genuine mountain experience without the slog.

Allow two to three hours for the round trip, depending on pace and how long you're stopping for views. There's no charge and no fixed opening hours - it's a free-access mountain peak. Winter can make it sketchy underfoot, so spring through autumn is your sweet spot.
