About Skiddaw

Skiddaw rises sharp and brown above Keswick, dominating the skyline like a proper fell should. At 3,053 feet, it's the fourth highest peak in England - nothing to sniff at, but crucially more forgiving than its alpine neighbours further south.

The main route from Keswick town centre climbs steadily through moorland and scree, taking most walkers around four hours for the round trip. It's relentless rather than technical, which means families with teenagers and moderately fit adults get a genuine mountain experience without needing ropes or scrambling skills. The views from the top reach across the Lake District to the Pennines on a clear day. On a murky one - and there are plenty - you'll see cloud and maybe your boots.

Go early, start before 9am if you can. The path gets rammed by midday, and parking in Keswick fills up fast. The ascent is steep enough that you'll feel like you've earned a pint at the Derwentwater Arms afterwards. Allow six hours if you're taking it steady with stops.

Skiddaw works brilliantly as a centrepiece to a walking holiday. Base yourself at one of the local campsites - Castlerigg Hall is well-positioned and has decent facilities - and combine this with easier lakeside walks or the gentler paths around Catbells. It's not technically difficult, but it will test your legs and lungs. Worth doing once.
