Skelwith Force

The River Brathay thunders over Skelwith Force with genuine force - there's no understating it. This waterfall near Skelwith Bridge is a proper cascade rather than a delicate trickle, and on a wet day the spray reaches you well before you've got close enough for a photo.

You can reach it easily from the car park at Skelwith Bridge itself, which takes the sting out of a moorland walk. The short stroll down to the falls is well-trodden and takes maybe ten minutes. What strikes you most is the sheer volume of water channelling through a narrow gorge - it's the kind of place that feels alive with power. The roar alone justifies the detour.

Walkers will find this a solid waypoint rather than a destination in itself. Families with young children can manage the approach without drama, though the rocks around the fall get slippery and require sensible footwear. History enthusiasts may find the old slate mill workings more interesting than the falls themselves - there's industrial heritage threaded through this valley, though you won't find interpretive boards spelling it out.

The best time to visit is after heavy rain when the water volume swells dramatically. Summer can leave it looking rather modest. If you're camped at Lakeside Retreat Glamping or staying at one of the other sites nearby, this makes an easy morning outing before exploring the broader Langdale valley. Admission is free and there are no restrictions on when you can visit, though daylight obviously helps.
