Shutlingsloe

The distinctive cone-shaped summit of Shutlingsloe rises unexpectedly from the Cheshire plains like something from a child's drawing - all sharp angles and purposeful height. It's only 506 metres, so don't expect Alpine drama, but the walk from Macclesfield side is proper rewarding and takes around two hours there and back depending on your pace.

What makes it work is the sudden sense of achievement. The approach climbs steadily through woodland before breaking out onto moorland, and the final push to the trig point feels genuinely earned. On a clear day, you get views across the Peak District that justify the effort - moorland rolling away in all directions, with Macclesfield visible below.

Walkers will absolutely get more from this than casual strollers. It's not a gentle ramble - the path gets steep in sections and can be muddy after rain. Families with teenagers might manage it fine, but younger kids could find it a bit relentless. There's no visitor centre or facilities at the top, just the view and the wind.

The beauty of staying at one of the nearby parks - Kiss wood cabins is only three miles away - is that Shutlingsloe fits neatly into a wider Peak District walking week. It's close enough for a morning expedition without eating a full day, which leaves afternoons free for Buxton or exploring the surrounding moorland. Go early to avoid the crowds, and bring layers. The weather changes fast up there.
