Lud's Church

Deep in the Staffordshire moorlands, a narrow chasm cuts through the landscape like a green cathedral. Lud's Church isn't actually a church at all - it's a spectacular natural ravine formed by an ancient landslip, creating towering moss-covered walls that soar 60 feet above your head.

Walking through this geological wonder feels genuinely otherworldly. The walls close in around you, dripping with moisture and draped in emerald moss that gives the whole place an almost mystical quality. Local legend claims this was where the Green Knight from Arthurian romance held court, and standing here, you can absolutely see why.

Getting there requires a proper walk across moorland from the nearest car park - about 45 minutes each way through sometimes boggy terrain. Wear decent boots and don't attempt it in poor weather. The path can be tricky to follow, so download an OS map or follow the waymarks carefully.

This is definitely one for keen walkers rather than casual day-trippers. Kids who love adventure will find it thrilling, but toddlers and pushchairs are completely out of the question. The ravine itself takes maybe 20 minutes to explore properly, but it's the kind of place that stays with you.

From nearby holiday parks like Rudyard Vale Caravan Park or Longnor Wood Holiday Park, it makes a cracking half-day expedition into some of the Peak District's wilder corners. Just south of Macclesfield, it's well worth the effort for something genuinely special.
