Shrewsbury Abbey

Standing where it has done for nearly a thousand years, this red sandstone abbey church dominates Shrewsbury's eastern approach with proper medieval gravitas. The Norman foundations date back to 1083, though what you see today is largely the nave of what was once a much grander Benedictine monastery.

Inside, the atmosphere strikes you immediately - that particular church quiet where footsteps echo and light filters through ancient glass. The pulpit, carved from a single piece of stone, is genuinely impressive, while the memorial stones tell stories of medieval merchants and Victorian worthies. History buffs will spot remnants of the original monastery buildings, though much was lost during the Dissolution.

Families might find it a bit dry after half an hour, but it's worth the stop if you're exploring Shrewsbury anyway. The abbey sits right by the river, so you can easily combine it with a walk along the Severn or a poke around the town centre.

From nearby holiday parks like Love2Stay or Oxon Hall, it's an easy drive into town. The abbey makes a decent rainy-day alternative when the kids are fed up with outdoor activities, though don't expect interactive displays or gift shops.
