Springfield Mere

Tucked away just outside Shrewsbury, this small lake draws anglers and dog walkers more than day-trippers looking for drama. Springfield Mere is the sort of place locals know about but tourists often miss entirely - and that's rather its appeal.

The water itself is nothing spectacular, but it's peaceful in that proper countryside way. Ducks paddle about, reeds rustle in the breeze, and if you're lucky you might spot a heron standing motionless by the water's edge. Families with young children will find it manageable for a gentle stroll, though there's not much to keep teenagers entertained beyond skimming stones.

Fishing seems to be the main draw here, with several spots where you can set up for the day. The paths around the mere are fairly flat, making it accessible for pushchairs and anyone who finds hill walks a bit much. Don't expect facilities though - this is very much a 'bring your own everything' sort of place.

If you're staying at one of the nearby parks like Love2Stay or Oxon Hall, it's worth the short drive for an hour's wander. The mere works well as part of a quieter day out, perhaps combined with exploring Shrewsbury itself. Just don't come expecting Lake District views - Springfield Mere is more about gentle countryside tranquillity than Instagram moments.
