The ruins of Shooting House sit on the moors above Ilkley, a proper windswept spot where you can understand why Bronze Age folk chose high ground. What remains is essentially the footprint of a stone structure - foundations and low walls scattered across heather and grass - but standing there you get a genuine sense of how exposed life must have been thousands of years ago.

This is archaeology for people who like walking more than interpretation boards. There's no visitor centre, no cafe, no hand-holding. You arrive, you look around, you think about it. That's the appeal if you're into Bronze Age settlement patterns or just fancy a moorland ramble with historical bones. Kids over about ten might find it interesting; younger ones will probably wonder why you've dragged them to a field.

The walk itself is the real draw - the approach gives you proper views across Wharfedale. Allow an hour to get there from Ilkley town centre, have a look around, and get back down. Bring a map or download offline routes because the moors can be confusing in mist. There's no admission fee because there's no one to collect it.

If you're camping at Breaks Fold Farm Glamping just three miles away, this makes a solid morning outing before heading to somewhere with more facilities. Brown Bank Caravan Park, slightly further off, is also within easy reach for a day trip. Both would be decent bases for exploring the wider Ilkley Moor archaeology - this site doesn't stand alone.
