Sheringham Village Sign

Standing at the edge of this Norfolk coastal town, you'll find one of England's more elaborate village signs - a proper work of art that tells Sheringham's story in wrought iron and paint. The sign depicts a fishing boat riding the waves, celebrating the town's maritime heritage, with steam trains puffing across the top rail to honour the North Norfolk Railway that still runs through here.

It's not exactly a day out, mind you. You'll spend five minutes here, maybe ten if you're particularly keen on local history or taking photos. The craftsmanship is lovely though, and it sits in a decent spot where you can appreciate both the sign and get your bearings for exploring Sheringham proper.

Families staying at nearby holiday parks like Kelling Heath or Woodhill Park will likely drive past this on their way into town for fish and chips or a trip on the Poppy Line railway. It makes for a nice photo opportunity, especially with kids who might enjoy spotting all the different elements worked into the design.

Cromer's famous pier and crab boats are just four miles east if you're making a proper day of exploring the coast. The sign works well as a starting point before heading down to Sheringham's pebble beach or catching that steam train to Holt - much more worthwhile ways to spend your time than lingering here too long.
